Our friend Laura is unlike anyone we’ve ever met.
She grew up in a missionary family in West Africa, where she contracted malaria eight times and learned fluent French in a conflict zone. Upon graduating from college in the United States, she began her foreign policy career right at the top, serving on Secretary of State Madeleine Albright’s staff.
Over the years, Laura has consulted with generals, NGOs and governments on topics ranging from demobilizing child soldiers to negotiating with rebel and militia groups. She has run a camp for special operations out of East Africa. She has seen death and destruction up close in ways that most of us cannot imagine.
And for years, she has been paying nearly half her income to the government, for the privilege of risking her life.
Last summer, Laura took a trip to Puerto Rico. An avid sailor, she loved the idea of moving her boat from frigid Washington, D.C. to a warmer climate. She looked around, studied the incredible tax incentives the island offers productive residents, and networked.
A few weeks later, she took the plunge and sailed to Puerto Rico, where she now lives at a marina when not working in war zones across the world.
It has been, she says, nothing less than a “life changing” move. And now she’s able to invest her tax savings to build projects that can help the island.
(This piece is being written/published in late July/early August, 2019. Currently, there is our controversy over Puerto Rico’s governor, which we’ll be covering in future alerts.)
