People often ask me about why I moved to Chile. (No, this piece isn’t about Chile.)
Did I move for the physical beauty? The cost of living? The entrepreneur-friendly environment?
Yes, yes and yes.
I could have started Sovereign Man from the US. I could have used my hometown as my home base and still have invested in the many private companies I’ve either started, run, or advised.
But the truth is, if you’re talking about 10+ years ago, I could not have afforded the life I wanted — which, admittedly, is both simple (really basic, utilitarian meals) and lavish (major international travel, an organic farm, a nice condo in the city) — at the price I wanted to pay for it, back in the US.
It would have cost me so much that it would not have been worth it. A 415-acre farm in Texas - one not nearly as lush or productive as mine here in Chile — is currently going for more than $2 million. Way more expensive than what I would pay here.
A 3-bedroom condo in a nice part of Dallas currently goes for around $700,000. Again, way more than what I’d pay for a nice place in Santiago.
When you move abroad, your money often goes farther. Now, this isn’t necessarily going to be true for Paris or Tokyo. But South America? Often, yes.
Taking advantage of this delta is what I call geo-arbitrage. And most Westerners can do it.
My buddy Isaac May, for example, grew up in North Carolina but now makes his home in Ecuador.
You hear a lot about people moving to Ecuador to retire. Unlike in the US, their social security checks actually afford them a nice lifestyle there. And man are there perks if you’re older and living in Ecuador — read all about them if you’re heading towards 65.
But a lot of those who move are like Isaac - young entrepreneurs who know they can make real progress with their finances by moving someplace less expensive.
That said, there are a lot of myths about Ecuador promoted online. For one thing, it isn’t nearly as cheap as you might have read elsewhere. But if you know what you’re doing, you can live a really comfortable lifestyle — and make good money — by moving there.
Isaac knows what he’s doing, and in today’s case study, you’ll learn all about why he moved to a beautiful city called Cuenca, and why you might consider doing the same.
You can have the lifestyle you want. You just have to get creative.
