At Sovereign Man, we often talk about the importance of a second passport. As a dual citizen, you will never be dependent on just one government or one system. With a second passport in hand, you instantly open up more options about where to live, work, invest and retire.
There are many ways to obtain a second passport as an adult, such as through your ancestry or by naturalization (living somewhere for a long spell to qualify for citizenship). But these paths usually take effort and dedication.
Second passports can come much easier to children, and more precisely, to newborns.
About 30 countries grant automatic citizenship to any child born on their soil, according to the “jus soli”, or “right of soil”, principle. Almost all of them are located in the Americas.
But we are happy to report that just a few days ago, Portugal enacted a law that made it an (almost) “jus soli” country. If you have your child in Portugal, then he or she might automatically become a Portuguese citizen.
We say “might” because there are certain conditions attached. But they are not difficult to meet and are well worth your effort.
Portugal by itself is an extremely livable place and its passport is an excellent travel document. And besides, it opens the entire European Union to its passport holders.
This is an amazing gift to give your child on his or her birthday.
Read about what exactly you need to do for your child to become a Portuguese national in today’s concise report.
